Hibernation isn’t an option.
There are simply too many things to do. Alpine sports, cozy cabin wood stoves, and cross-country trails to explore. Snowmobile to your favorite ice fishing spot, and then hunker in at a local tavern as twilight takes over.
Skiers and rider have made the North Warren Wilds their destination since the 1930s when ‘Snow Trains’ would deposit adventurers at the North Creek Depot. Today’s guests arrive by car, ready to catch a deep breath of chairlift air on your way to another legendary descent.
Skiing and Riding
The North Warren Trailblazers and C & C Adirondack Snowmobile Tours are the most knowledgeable about where to start sledding in the North Warren Wilds. Connected trails through Chestertown extend from Lake George to Minerva and north the the Schroon Lake trails.
Snomobiling
Get your steps in with a little extra underfoot. The North Warren Wilds are crisscrossed with hiking trails on state land and private destinations like Garnet Hill Lodge, Friends Lake Inn, and the Ski Bowl at Gore Mountain.
Snowshoeing
The North Creek trail network does include winter fat-bike routes, but they’re limited — roughly a couple of designated winter trails in the broader system. These are typically multi-use trails (shared with snowshoeing or skiing), and conditions depend heavily on grooming and snowfall.
Garnet Hill Lodge, primarily a Nordic ski center, allows biking when conditions permit. The terrain is rolling, scenic and well-managed.
For more of a local ride, try the Caroline Fish trails at Dynamite Hill in Chestertown. Avoid groomed XC ski tracks unless explicitly allowed, and ride only when firm (don’t rut soft trails).
Fat Tire Mountain Biking
Pack your tip-ups and your favorite chair: spend a day on the lake in a different way. Claim your spot and auger down to the depths. There are lakes and ponds all over the North Warren Wilds. Be sure to check for ice thickness before venturing out on frozen water.

Nordic Skiing
Groomed loops at the Gore Mountain Ski Bowl, the Friends Lake Inn, and The Garnet Hill Lodge are waiting for cross-country skiers to traverse. Kick-and-glide or skate, even backcountry.
Dynamite Hill in Chestertown offers a rope tow and a wide-open slope for tubes, toboggans, and sleds. Lighting on-hill will have you laughing and sliding into the evening.
